Fun Techtivities in August!

Celebrate Singapore’s 59th birthday by having some educational fun and exploring #Techtivities with your friends and family! 🇸🇬

Starting with some #TechNews, we all have heard of the 3Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle. Technology is one tool that people are increasingly adopting as part of environmental efforts!

Scientists at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have created a new use for waste paper 🗞️. By heating 🔥 blocks of waste paper in the absence of oxygen, the blocks are reduced to pure carbon! These blocks can be used as carbon anodes, which are important parts in batteries 🔋. These carbon anodes are not only eco-friendly ♻️ but are also cost-efficient 💵. What's more, they're functionally similar to typical anodes used in batteries. Read more about this innovative method here!

Now that we’re all set, keep scrolling on to discover techtivities that you and your family can indulge in this month! ✨

To wrap up our #TechtivitiesOfTheMonth, here is a fun #TechFact!

Have you heard of roguelikes? These are games inspired by Rogue, an RPG featuring procedurally generated dungeon crawls where no two runs are the same due to randomisation! (Source)

Now, many chess-playing engines have been created and many are free and open-source. In fact, already in 2009, a chess playing program running on a smartphone won the Copa Mercosur, an International Master-level tournament. (Source)

If you haven’t seen our previous techtivity recommendations, check out our July #TechtivitiesOfTheMonth, which includes more cool tech-related activities you can do with friends and family!
