Did you know that Douglas Engelbart created a prototype of the first computer mouse in 1964? It had a wooden shell rather than the plastic ones we use today! (Source)
The device was nicknamed "mouse" because of the wire came out of the end of the shell, which resembled a mouse's tail. Nowadays, wireless mice are more common, so the similarity to the animal may be less obvious.
